The TownLake YMCA is the Association’s first and largest full-service facility. Established in 1971, the original 64,000 square foot facility has been expanded on three occasions to ensure quality of space and services.
In 2009 KAH Architecture began designs to retrofit the TownLake YMCA with a new grand entrance and provide a complete interior overhaul of the facility. Located in downtown Austin with immediate access to the popular TownLake hike and bike trails, the goal of the design was to give the building a revitalized and inviting presence for patrons and the public alike. A new curtain wall façade at the main entrance, a bright color scheme, a re-envisioned open floor plan, and newly renovated landscaping provide an experience that brings the energy and spirit of downtown Austin to every space within the building.
Faced with the challenge of maintaining the facility’s operation throughout construction, the project was designed to be built in three phases. Construction of phase one was completed in November of 2011 and included renovations to the basement’s free-weights area, the first floor’s strength training and group exercise rooms, and a major addition to allow expansion of the cardio exercise facilities. Phase two was completed in June of 2012. It encompassed the main entrance lobby staircase addition as well as new staff offices, child-watch areas, and locker rooms. The addition of an elevator in Phase 3 makes the facility entirely ADA accessible and completes in December, 2012.
